    Default Getting engaged

Let's just say you were with someone who you thought was the right person. How long would you have to date that person before you got engaged? It seems people are waiting longer and longer these days. I have friends who were together between 5 and 8 years before they got engaged.

I would wait at a minimum of around two years. I think it takes time to get to know someone. It often also takes trials and some difficult times in order to know how this person will react in different situations. If it's true love, what's the rush?

I'm kind of the opposite, if you know it's true love and you've been out several times and many months have passed, why not make the commitment just to make it official? I've known people who got married within a year of knowing each other and their marriage has stood the test of time.

It's up to the people that are together. There is no set time limit of when to get engaged. The people will just know when the time is right and if they are right together. The key is that they are both ready and in agreement.

This is the answer to the question of Bridget. There are people who wants to settle down early, while others want to make sure that their partner is the right person for them even though how long it takes for them to wait. Its really up to the couple when is the right time for them to be engaged.

If things were going very well with someone and he proposed early on I would probably accept on the condition that it be a long engagement. It is much easier to call off an engagement than it is to get divorced and break up a family. I don't think it matters when you get engaged, but waiting to actually get married is probably the right thing to do for most people.

I'd like to to quote the hip hop artist Common when he says, "It doesn't take all day to recognize sunshine". When it's right, well it's right. If someone is stalling they probably are unsure or just taking their time. The slowest one sets the pace of the relationship though, so the other person who may already be there emotionally should not rush because that would be asking for problems.

If you know it you just do, like my friend today who just got engaged (well almost, she is popping the question on New Year's). Most times its up to those involved how they feel, each of us are a little different.

I would definitely have to feel like I knew the person and how they were in certain circumstances. I believe like most of you it is something that has to be agreed upon to both parties, I would say at least a year.

My experience is the exact opposite! I have seen many of my friends date and get engaged within a year of meeting and beginning to date each other. It seems way too fast for me, almost.
